Abstract :

The relationship between the pulp and the periodontium is dynamic. Multiple anatomical and iatrogenic pathways can communicate these tissues in health and disease. These pathways include furcation canals, dentinal cracks, and vertical root fractures. It is generally agreed that the pulp and its necrotic content affect the periodontal tissues. A controversy exists over the ability of periodontal disease to affect the dental pulp.
Periimplantitis has become a frequent complication observed around dental implants and an endodontic infection of a nearby tooth or an immediate implant placement in an inflamed bone socket from failing endodontic therapy has been associated with retrograde peri-implantitis, a radiographic lucency at the implant apex. Following a Q and A process, this presentation will review diagnostic techniques, prognosis, and treatment alternatives for endo/perio/implant lesions.

Learning objectives  :

  • Evaluate the characteristics and clinical morphology of endo-perio lesions
  • Assess the potential risk of endodontic lesions in the vicinity of an implant
  • Discuss the clinical cases of cracked teeth, vertical root fractures, and cemental tears
  • Discuss the prognosis of cases with complex endo-perio involvement
  • Discuss the prevention and treatment options for peri-implant defects related to previous endodontic problems
