Climate change is currently one of the biggest threats to the well-being of our planet, humanity, and ecosystems. It is caused by an increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in Earth’s atmosphere. Unfortunately, the healthcare sector is responsible for around five per cent of global greenhouse emissions, of which oral healthcare is an important contributor.
Reducing dentistry’s impact on the planet
This World Environment Day, FDI encourages the oral healthcare sector to commit to take care of our Only One Earth and proactively reduce the environmental impact of dentistry on the planet. Read and share our sustainability infographic aimed at dentists and dental teams to help raise awareness of the carbon emissions created by dental interventions. Previously, released in English, the resource is now available in an additional six languages including Arabic, Chinese, French, Hungarian, Italian and Spanish. National Dental Associations that would like to request translations of resources in their local languages can contact FDI Headquarters at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The infographic can be printed and displayed in dental practices to inform dental teams and patients about the important environmental impact that dental interventions have. Dentists and their teams are urged to promote high-quality preventive care amongst patients to significantly reduce dentistry’s carbon footprint.
In addition to this, FDI recently also launched a Consensus Statement on Environmentally Sustainable Oral Healthcare, developed jointly with key stakeholders in the oral healthcare supply chain. The statement sheds light on the best opportunities to improve and deliver environmentally sustainable solutions to protect our planet. Collective transformative actions at the global level are essential preserve the environment we share.
