Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) continues to pose a significant threat to global health, compromising the effectiveness of essential treatments and increasing the complexity of managing infections. Dentists and dental teams play a critical role in addressing this challenge, particularly through responsible prescribing practices and preventive care.

In response, FDI in collaboration with the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, has relaunched its Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), “Tackling Antibiotic Resistance: What Should Dental Teams Do?”
Registration is now open, with the course commencing on 11 May 2026.

Supporting dental teams in antimicrobial stewardship

First introduced in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, this course provided timely guidance to dental professionals navigating complex prescribing decisions under unprecedented conditions. Since then, the global understanding of AMR has evolved, alongside updated recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO).

The 2026 edition reflects these developments, incorporating recent global policy and clinical guidance, including the outcomes of the 2024 United Nations High-Level Meeting on AMR, the ongoing revision of the WHO Global Action Plan on antimicrobial resistance, and practical tools such as the WHO AWaRe Antibiotic Book, which supports evidence-based prescribing.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the global problem of antibiotic resistance (ABR)
  • Summarize the impact of resistant infections on dentistry and of dentistry on ABR more generally
  • Reflect on why ABR is a problem which affects everyone
  • Explore the risks of both infections and antibiotics to patients
  • Identify what dentists and dental teams can do to help tackle ABR
  • Explain the importance of local solutions to the global problem and understand that it is an issue for the whole dental team and beyond
