International Dental Journal enters top 10 per cent of dentistry journals with an impact factor of 5.2
The International Dental Journal (IDJ) is celebrating a remarkable achievement as its impact factor increased to 5.2 in 2025 from 3.7 in the previous year. The increase places the journal among the top 10 per cent of dentistry journals worldwide.
The achievement reflects the dedication and leadership of Editor-in-Chief Prof. Lakshman Samaranayake, the IDJ Editorial Board, the FDI leadership and publishing partner Elsevier. It is also a recognition of the authors, reviewers and readers whose contributions continue to strengthen IDJ as a trusted global platform for dental science, policy and practice.
On receiving this exceptional recognition Professor Samaranayake said:
“As Editor-in-Chief, I am truly delighted to serve the needs of our members and the wider global community by advancing dental science through the International Dental Journal. This achievement reflects our collective commitment to excellence and to FDI’s vision of a world with optimal oral health. Through IDJ, we will continue to provide an outstanding platform that translates science into knowledge, policy and practice for the benefit of the public worldwide.”
Over the past several years, IDJ has undergone a period of transformation. Following the journal's transition to open access, Prof. Samaranayake assumed the role of Editor-in-Chief in 2022 and introduced a series of strategic new initiatives that expanded the journal's scope and relevance.
These included the launch of a Science and Technology section, the introduction of Succinct Rapid Communications and a dedicated subsection focused on artificial intelligence (AI) in dentistry. More recently, the journal introduced special virtual issues and multiple topics that bring together research and perspectives on contemporaneous topics such as AI and digital dentistry, shaping oral health and dental care.
The increase in impact factor reflects the journal's growing influence and its commitment to publishing research that advances knowledge, informs policy and supports clinical practice around the world.
