Abstract :

Functionality in ceramic veneer treatments is a fundamental aspect to ensure their clinical success and long-term durability. Beyond aesthetics, veneers must integrate harmoniously into the patient's masticatory system, respecting the principles of occlusion, anterior guidance, and mandibular dynamics. A proper occlusal relationship enables a balanced distribution of masticatory loads, thereby avoiding excessive stress on both restorations and natural teeth. The importance of occlusion cannot be overstated; a well-designed veneer can prevent fractures, debonding, premature wear, and discomfort in the temporomandibular joint. On the other hand, an occlusal alteration or interference can lead to microfractures in the ceramic and may also impact periodontal and muscular health. This lecture highlights the essential evidence-based occlusal and biomechanical factors recommended for the success of ceramic veneers.

Learning objectives :

  • The participants will learn how to evaluate proper functional occlusion to ensure that the veneers help maintain joint and muscular stability, promoting an efficient and comfortable masticatory pattern for the patient.
  • Recognize the importance of functional occlusion in the design, planning, and cementation of ceramic veneers, understanding its influence on the durability and biomechanical stability of the treatment.
  • Identify the main functional factors—such as anterior guidance, occlusal contacts, eccentric movements, and force control—that must be evaluated and balanced to prevent fractures or failures in ceramic restorations.
  • Apply clinical criteria and occlusal adjustment protocols that ensure the harmonious integration of veneers into the masticatory system, promoting both aesthetics and long-term function.
