Abstract :
If pediatric dental care has traditionally focused on disease-oriented treatment, I believe it is now time to shift toward function-oriented care. Function and form influence each other, and in growing children, proper functional development affects arch form, facial structure, and overall health.
In this lecture, we will explore the fundamental functions of the oral structure and examine theories and techniques that enable dentists to support proper oral function and development. By fostering healthy oral function early, we can contribute to better long-term dental and systemic health outcomes for children.

Learning objectives :

  • Understand the Fundamentals of Oral Function – Identify the key components of oral function, including breathing, chewing, swallowing, and speech, and their role in overall health and development.

  • Analyze the Relationship Between Oral Function and Growth – Examine how proper oral function influences dental arch development, facial structure, and systemic health, particularly in growing children.

  • Apply Strategies to Improve Oral Function in Clinical Practice – Learn diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to promote healthy oral function, prevent dysfunction, and support optimal oral development in paediatric patients.
