Global Periodontal Health Project

Gum health is often overlooked during daily oral health routines. Periodontal (gum) diseases including gingivitis (inflammation of the gums) and periodontitis (inflammation of the tissue around the teeth, often causing shrinkage of the gums and loosening of the teeth), is among humanity’s most common diseases, affecting up to 50% of the adult population worldwide. Periodontal health is essential to general health and key to securing quality of life and well-being at every stage of life.

Up to 50% of the adult population worldwide, placing periodontal disease among humanity’s most common diseases.

When left untreated, periodontal disease can cause tooth loss (partial to complete edentulism) and is closely associated with other diseases including diabetes and cardiovascular disease, with which it shares common risk factors, e.g. unhealthy diet and tobacco use. Periodontal disease has a significant socio-economic impact on governments and populations worldwide, yet it remains a low priority and treatment is still unavailable in many countries.

The road to achieving periodontal health

The Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP) was launched in October 2015 to reduce the burden of periodontal disease by raising awareness of its impact and engaging the public, oral health and other health professionals, educators, and policymakers in promoting periodontal health.

Project goals

Increase global awareness of periodontal health

Provide tools and resources to help reduce the disease burden and raise the priority of periodontal health at the national level

Integrate oral/periodontal health into policies addressing general health and NCDs by taking a common risk factor approach

The Global Periodontal Health Project is supported by Procter & Gamble.

Symposium

In 2018, the GPHP experts hosted a symposium entitled 'Proactive prevention and effective periodontal care: Major challenges, scientific updates and key issues for success' at the 2018 FDI WDC. Main topics included global periodontal health challenges and related socio-economic impact; the new classification of periodontal and peri-implant disease; effective management of periodontal disease, as well as prevention, diagnosis and treatment; and periodontal care challenges, recommendations, solutions, and future perspectives.

Periodontal Diseases Chairside Guide

Prevention and patient management
Chairside Guides

Periodontal diseases are chronic inflammatory diseases of bacterial aetiology that affect the tooth-supporting soft and hard tissues:

  • Plaque-induced gingivitis is a gingival inflammation without attachment loss and bone loss.
  • Periodontitis is an inflammatory lesion of periodontal tissues resulting in loss of attachment and alveolar bone.

This chairside guide helps oral health professionals with patient risk assessment by categorizing the patient’s risk profile as either LOW, MEDIUM or HIGH.

Periodontal Health and Disease

A practical guide to reduce the global burden of periodontal disease
Toolkits

This advocacy toolkit is produced as part of the Global Periodontal Health Project (GPHP), launched in 2017 with the aim of reducing the global burden of periodontal disease. Based on considerations from the White Paper on Prevention and Management of Periodontal Diseases for Oral Health and General Health and from the World Oral Health Forum 2017, it aims to assist FDI National Dental Associations (NDAs) in designing, conducting and evaluating advocacy campaigns to advance the implementation of innovative policies to effectively prevent and manage periodontal disease, also known as gum disease.

This toolkit provides background information in a language which you can use with policymakers; a series of key messages; and practical guidance to assist you in designing and implementing successful advocacy campaigns which promote better periodontal health. It concludes with a series of case studies which could serve as examples for the implementation of innovative programmes.

White Papers

This white paper provides oral health professionals with a comprehensive yet succinct summary of the main issues related to the global prevalence and impacts, aetiology and pathogenesis, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of periodontal diseases. It also identifies the key challenges in tackling the burden of periodontal diseases and provides an action plan for oral health professionals, policymakers, and other related actors.

Global Periodontal Health: Challenges, priorities and perspectives

Periodontitis is closely linked with general health and major NCDs, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes. Even though it is one of the most common diseases worldwide, it seldom receives the attention it deserves. This consideration has led FDI World Dental Federation (FDI) to launch the GPHP to tackle the burden of periodontal diseases.

This three-year project was officially launched in 2017. Its vision is to achieve global periodontal health; its mission is to reduce the global burden of periodontal diseases. The project involves a global awareness campaign; the development of specialized toolkits for patients, the public, oral healthcare professionals, policymakers and non-governmental agencies; symposia during World Dental Congresses; a World Oral Health Forum; and the production of a white paper and policy statements.

To pursue this work, the 2017 World Oral Health Forum (WOHF) was dedicated to periodontal diseases as a part of the ongoing GPHP. Current evidence, trends, and challenges linked to periodontal health and disease were discussed in three subsequent panel sessions. As a result, the draft content of the upcoming FDI white paper on periodontal diseases was reviewed and priorities for the GPHP were set.

Results of a global survey with FDI National Dental Associations
Surveys

FDI conducted a survey among its 150 members on periodontal health and found that, from the 61 National Dental Associations (NDAs) who took part, only 40% have a national monitoring and evaluation plan of periodontal disease. The survey was carried out between June and October 2017 and inquired on national health policies, health information systems, periodontal health education and workforce, and preventive or promotional activities carried out by NDAs.

All responses were gathered from the following FDI regions: Africa (18 out of 29), Asia Pacific & Middle East (19 NDAs out of 37 NDAs), Europe (11 out of 63 NDAs), Latin America (9 out of 16 NDAs), and North America (4 out of 5 NDAs).
